ティーと言えばイギリスですよね？でも、一体、私たちは本物のティーを経験したことがあるのでしょうか？
というわけで、今回はイギリス人と共に本物のティーを経験してみることにしました。
朝、目覚めてベッドで飲む紅茶を「アーリーモーニングティー」、朝食の時に飲む紅茶を「ブレックファストティー」、午前11時頃に飲む紅茶を「イレブンジズティー」、ランチの時に飲む紅茶を「ランチティー」、午後に飲む紅茶を「アフタヌーンティー」、夕食の時に飲む紅茶を「ハイティー」などとイギリスではティーごとにそれぞれ名前がついていますが、日本ではやはりアフタヌーンティーが有名ですよね。伝統的なお茶会はクリームティーと呼ばれ、スコーンとジャムとクロッテドクリームは必ずと言っていいほど出されます。この他によくあるのは薄切りキュウリのサンドイッチやショートブレッド、ブランディーケーキなど。
When we think of tea, we think of England, right? But have we ever experienced genuine tea?
So here, we decided to experience real tea with English people.
Tea in bed after waking up in the morning is called “early morning tea,” tea at breakfast is called “breakfast tea,” tea around 11 am is called “elevenses tea,” tea at lunch is called “lunch tea,” tea in the afternoon is called “afternoon tea,” tea at dinner is called “high tea”. In England, each tea has its own name, but in Japan, afternoon tea is still the most famous. The traditional tea is called a cream tea, where scones, jam and clotted cream are almost always served. Other common items include thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches, shortbread, and brandy cake.
今回のティーパーティのためになるべく現地の物を探し出し、紅茶はイギリスの大衆的なTetley(1837年創業）というブランドのものを見つけました。ティーバッグ状になっていますが、ひもは付いていません。これをかなり濃く出します。それから、イギリス人は、ほとんどの場合、温めないミルクを入れたミルクティーを飲みます。
イギリスでよく聞かれるのは、先にミルクを入れ、それからティーを入れる派なのか、それともティーにミルクを入れる派なのか？同じようにスコーンを食べる時にクロテッドクリームを先に塗る派かそれともジャムを先に塗る派か？どうでもよさそうですけれど、それも会話になるというのがイギリス流のようです。
焼き立てのスコーンに合わせるジャムはMackay’s(1938年創業）のシャンパン入りストロベリーと中沢(1973年創業）のクロッテドクリーム。ナイフは使わずに手で二つに割って内側を上に向け、両方にクロッテドクリームとジャムを塗ります。
Walker’s(1898年創業）のショートブレッドと呼ばれるバタービスケットはスーパーなどで見かけた方もあるかもしれません。硬いけれどバターの風味がたっぷりのクッキーです。ちなみにイギリスではクッキーのことをビスケットと呼びます。
この他にRodda’s(1890年創業）のキャラメルのようなファッジやオレンジの形をしていて、一房ごとに割ることのできるTerry’s（1767年創業）のオレンジチョコレートもご用意しました。
今回、ゲストでいらしたイギリスの方は、現在JAXAに勤務されていて、色々なプロジェクトに関わっていらっしゃるのだとか。
For this tea party, we tried to find something as “British” as possible and found a popular British brand of tea called Tetley (founded in 1837). It comes in tea bag form, but no strings attached. This is served quite thick. Most British people drink milk tea with lukewarm milk.
People often ask in England, do you put the milk in first and then the tea, or do you put the milk in the tea? Similarly, when eating scones, do you put the clotted cream first or the jam first? It may seem unimportant, but it seems to be the British way to have a conversation about it.
The jams to go with the freshly baked scones are Mackay’s (established in 1938) strawberry with champagne and Nakazawa’s (established in 1973) clotted cream. Instead of using a knife, break the scone in half by hand, with the inside facing up, and spread the clotted cream and jam on both sides.
You may have seen Walker’s (established in 1898) butter cookies called shortbread at a supermarket. These cookies are hard but full of buttery flavor. By the way, cookies are called biscuits in England.
We also had caramel-like fudge from Rodda’s (established in 1890) and orange chocolate from Terry’s (established in 1767), which is shaped like an orange and can be broken into individual bunches.
Our guest from England is currently working for JAXA and is involved in various projects.
その中でも、火星に行ってサンプルをとってくるという来年に予定されているMMXというプロジェクトや、もちろん、はやぶさ２の話題も出ました。
Among the topics she told us were the MMX project, which is scheduled to go to 2 of Martian satellites next year to take samples back home, and, of course, Hayabusa 2.
JAXAでは、もちろん、ご自身の研究もありますが、広報の仕事に携わったり、プライベートでは野良猫レスキュー隊にも入っているという活動的な方なので、話題も豊富です。
At JAXA, of course, she does her own research, but she is also involved in Public Relations and is an active member of a stray cat rescue team in her private time, so she has a lot to talk about.
英語と日本語の2言語での広報活動なども行っているので、言語の問題等も大変なのだとか。例えば、はやぶさ２でオーストラリアに着陸したサンプルを採取するためにJALが特別機を飛ばしてくれたそうなのですが、その便名がJL8823。日本人には「あー、はやぶさね！」とすぐにわかるでしょうが、欧米人には何のことだかわからない。それを英語でどう表すか頭を悩ませたそうです。
また、同じ英語でも、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語はかなり違うので、どこの国の英語なのかという少し高度な言葉当てクイズなどもありました。
She and her colleagues are doing publicity and other activities in two languages, English and Japanese, so they have to deal with language problems. For example, when they were trying to collect Hayabusa 2 samples landed in Australia, JAL arranged a special plane to go to Australia, and its flight number was JL8823, which Japanese people would immediately recognise as “Oh, Ha-ya-bu-sa!” but Westerners don’t know what we are talking about. She had a hard time thinking of how to express it in English. Also, since British English and American English are quite different, we had an advanced quiz to find out which country’s English was used.
別の科学者や中学生、遠方からなど、色々な方が参加してくれましたが、外国出身の方も多く、合計7か国の方々が集まるティーパーティーとなりました。
Among the participants there were another scientist, secondary school students, people coming from far away and many foreigners, from a total of seven different countries.
